The political culture in the West is in a process of transformation; or, rather, let me states that the political pendulum in Western countries is currently swinging back towards Conservatism. It will swang back, again, later. However, for now the trends of unmistakeable.
In the United States, the federal government, almost all Republican-controlled federal states, as well as some Democratic controlled ones, have started dismantling so-called DEI programmes (that is, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion – in short, their version of affirmative action and employment equity).
Europe is turning sharp right; and, what is the most noticeable feature of this swing, is the fact that the turn is led by young people. Liberalism and leftist politics are under severe pressure.
Italy has a right-wing government, currently very popular, led by Giorgia Meloni. In Germany, in recent election, the Conservative Christian Democrats have fund the most votes (28%), followed by the far-right AfD (20%). In France, the far-right National Rally won 143 seats in Parliament, and its leader, Marine Le Pen, has a realistic chance of winning the 2027 Presidential elections. Romania already has a far-right government. The government of the Netherlands can be regarded as right-wing.For the first time since time in remembrance, a far-right political party in Britain is polling at the number 1 position; above the Tories and Labour.
The era of Affirmative Action and Wokeness is, for now, for a few years, pushed back.
And this is an extremely dangerous trend for the South African government, who’s entire identity, all of its claim to fame, of its benefits, are entrenched in an ideology similar to Critical Race Theory, where the use of the instruments of state to enforce grotesque race-based targets, benefitting a few, mostly Black, elite are not only legal, but a moral necessity.
Since 1994, the ANC could do whatever they like, in terms of race relations and transformation, in South Africa. They were untouchable. They were the generation of Nelson Mandela’ and, if at the time, to criticise Nelson Mandela was not to be a good person; to be an evil racist.
Not even Presidents, Kings and Prime Ministers in the capitals of the world dared to speak ill of this class of freedom fighters that has managed to defeat the evil apartheid regime. You didn’t dare speaking ill of this heroes; just as you did not dare speaking good of the perpetrators of apartheid.
And, really, it did not matter whatever the new rulers of South Africa did; they were always welcome in the capitols of the world, and criticising them were frowned upon. Later, the mood changed slightly, but mostly as far as economic matters were concerned. The handling of race-relations was till a no-go area. Sympathising with White South Africans BOUT Employment Equity and Black Economic Empowerment was, essentially, to be classified a racist and apartheid denier.
In the 2000s, the Western World became consumed by the social and cultural movements that were ideologically based on Critical Race Theory and the Black Lives Matter philosophies. Not even conservative governments in Western states, but specifically in the United States, dared to remove affirmative action provisions for the statue books.
But, slowly yet certainly, a revolt started brewing; fuelled by anti-emigration sentiment in Europe, and with anti-Wokeness feelings in the United States. The Trump phenomenon pro0vided impetus to this revolt. Ordinary citizens were trapped in this culture of Wokeness and Critical Race Theory. As long as resistance against it was brutality oppressed by state organs, they had to fall in line. However, Trump proven to be able to gain control of the organs of state, which reduce the threat of resistance to his supporters.
Then, in 2020, a breaking point was reach. The death of George Floyd, the aggressive reaction to it, the openly anti-White sentiments that were shamelessly spread as part of the public discourse, burst open a simmering discontent. The lid was kept on it by the reality of a Biden Presidency. However, even then, in 2021, 222, 23, it was clear that the mood in the United as changing, and that the resistance against Wokeness was spreading.
Then Trump on the 2024 Presidential elections in the United States. He got rid of affirmative action, declare it illegal. Wokeness was pushed to the back. And his popularity among voters has since only growing.
And, it seems, Europe is fast following suite.
It is often said that, if you want to see a country whose Constitution is based on the Critical Race Theory, you must come to South Africa. There’s just no provision made for, even the possibility, of Black-on-White racism. Racism, by definition, from the Constitution, through all state organisms, was, and is, White-on-Black racism.
This is in the same idiom as the DEI programmes in the United States. Trump and conservative American hate it. They are set to destroy it.
Obviously, there are more to Trump’s behaviour than that. It is also about the United States’ foreign interests, and the specifically the interests of its friend, Israel. However, it is also abaut political culture.
